The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) is a state-of-the-art, “ultra-green” wet and computational laboratory building dedicated to genomic research located at the University of California San Diego Campus in La Jolla, CA. The facility comprises a three-story, 28,600 SF office wing, and a single-story, 12,605 SF laboratory wing. The first net-zero energy, LEED Platinum biological research laboratory in the world, the JCVI generates 100% of its power on-site.

SC Engineers provided an open protocol, open platform Facility Management and Control System (FMCS) for the facility which integrated all smart building systems and equipment. A third-party building automation dashboard was designed to provide a custom user interface that acts as the primary user interface for all systems and overlays energy performance in every aspect of facility management. The result is an intuitive system that allows for ease of operation as well as reduces operation and maintenance costs.
